Leather Jacket Size Catalog
Leather jackets have no universal sizing standard. A size 38 from a Japanese maker can fit like a European 46, and a "medium" from one brand can be three inches narrower in the chest than a medium from another. The cut — biker, classic, military — changes the silhouette entirely. DEGABOO collects community-measured shoulder, chest, sleeve, and body length data for each jacket so you can compare actual dimensions across brands before ordering.

For each leather jacket, we record the four measurements that determine how the jacket fits your body.
| Measurement | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Shoulder | Distance across the back from shoulder seam to shoulder seam. The single most critical measurement — if the shoulder doesn't fit, nothing else can be adjusted. |
| Chest | Circumference of the jacket at chest height, measured across the front and back. Compare to your own chest measurement to estimate ease (extra room). |
| Sleeve | Length from shoulder seam to cuff. Sleeve length is harder to alter in leather than in fabric, so getting it right matters. |
| Body Length | Length from the top of the collar or shoulder seam to the hem. Determines whether the jacket sits at the hip, waist, or thigh. |
Hide Types and How They Fit
The type of leather affects not just the look and feel but how the jacket fits over time. Different hides break in differently.
Horsehide
Horsehide is the most structured of the common jacket leathers. It is denser and stiffer than cowhide and breaks in more slowly — a new horsehide jacket can feel almost rigid at first. It stretches less than cowhide over time, so sizing very close to your measurements is generally safe. Horsehide is most commonly used in vintage-style American and Japanese motorcycle jackets and flight jackets. Some wearers find it runs slightly snug in the chest due to the low stretch.
Cowhide
Cowhide is more supple than horsehide and breaks in relatively quickly. It has more give, particularly at the chest and sleeves, so some wearers who are between sizes choose to size down slightly and allow the leather to stretch to fit. Cowhide is used across all jacket styles — biker, classic, and military — and varies significantly in thickness and weight depending on the tannery.
Sheepskin (Mouton)
Sheepskin is the softest and lightest of the three common jacket leathers. It drapes rather than holds a rigid shape, so the fit is more relaxed from day one. Because of its softness, sheepskin may stretch more in the body over time than horsehide or cowhide. Sizing closer to your measurements is generally advisable.
Jacket Styles
Biker / Café Racer
Biker and café racer jackets are cut to be worn in a forward-leaning riding position. The sleeves are angled forward, the collar sits high, and the body is often cut short. When trying on a biker jacket, check the fit in a slightly hunched position — it may feel constricting standing straight but perfect when seated on a motorcycle or leaning over a cafe table. Slim-fit biker jackets in particular run close in the chest and have minimal ease.
Classic / Motorcycle
Classic motorcycle jackets — the A-1, A-2, and their descendants — have a more upright cut than biker jackets. They are designed to fit well both seated and standing. Ease at the chest is typically in the 3–5 cm range, and the silhouette is straighter from chest to hem.
Military / Flight
Military-inspired and flight jackets (B-3, G-1, MA-1 style) are cut to be worn over heavier clothing and tend to have the most ease of any leather jacket style. The chest is often cut full, and the body length varies by model. If you plan to wear the jacket over a thick sweater or shirt, the extra room is intentional. If you plan to wear it as an outer layer over a t-shirt, you may want to size down from your usual jacket size.
How to Use the Catalog
- Measure your own shoulder width (across your back from bone to bone) and chest circumference before looking at jackets.
- Find the model you're considering and compare its shoulder and chest measurements to yours. Add 2–4 cm to your chest for the desired ease.
- Check the sizing tip for each product — many list brand-specific advice (e.g., "size up 1 if between sizes," "horsehide runs snug in the chest").
- Read community fit feedback to see whether the model generally runs tight, true to size, or generous.
- Use the Compare tool to place two jackets side by side if you're choosing between models or brands.
